I've struggled over matter of child baptism for several years; now having a son of my own provoked me to search for the truth in the matter even more fervently. I’ve now studied Marthoma church's position on the subject, as well as that of the Orthodox, Catholic, and Presbyterian, and Pentecostal churches. In my opinion, among them the covenant theology and catholic positions are the most coherent arguments. But I’d like to assert that coherency does not necessitate correctness or validity of an argument. I’d also like to assert that the widely popular covenant baptism is not as “Sola Scriptura” as it claims to be. My primary problem with the paedobaptistic views is that in its practice, it has blurred the line of who is part of the one true Church. Its resulted in literally thousands of people who consider themselves saved, when they in actuality are unredeemed/unregenerate by any stretch of the imagination. I realize, some may consider this critique judgmental but please believe me that scripture warrants it. On the flip side, some of the more charismatic churches who practice adult baptism ascribe more to baptism than scripture teaches. They implicitly add works (baptism) as necessary part of the salvation process, rather than teaching salvation by faith/grace alone. Please check out the following article by John Macarthur regarding the subject of paedobaptism. It outlines some further considerations: http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/INFBAP.HTM. I believe its time we stop practicing child baptism in the Marthoma church. Furthermore, we also should stop allowing unbelievers to be confirmed and participate at the Holy Communion table. Let me know what you think. elvin.varghese@gmail.com
